A monument that has risen to become one of India’s most prominent tourist attractions in record time stands in the center of Gujarat, along the banks of the Narmada River – the Statue of Unity. This enormous statue pays tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who is usually referred to as the “Iron Man of India,” for uniting the country post-independence.
When you approach it, you can feel its enormity as well as the pride it evokes. Yet the Statue of Unity is more than its size; it’s part of an entire experience of travel with culture, nature, and adventure
The concept to construct a statue of Sardar Patel was initially revealed in 2010, and construction officially started in 2013. The project was conceived by the celebrated sculptor Ram V. Sutar and was gigantic, employing thousands of tonnes of steel and bronze. It took almost four years to be finished and was opened on October 31, 2018, on Patel’s 143rd birthday anniversary.
It stands at 182 meters, a record for the world’s tallest statue, almost twice the size of the Statue of Liberty. Yet, beyond being a record holder, it is a testament to Patel’s work to unite more than 560 princely states into a single India.
