Shakti peeth are sacred pilgrim sites which are of utmost importance in the Shaktism branch of Hinduism. These are dedicated to Shakti Mata and mentioned in different puranas. They are mostly described in the Devi Bhagwat Purana. There is a mythological story behind these Shakti peethas. The story of Mata sati whose father Daksha Prajapati had once arranged a yagya in which all gods and goddesses were invited. But he did not invite his own daughter and her husband who was lord Shiva himself. Mata Sati who attended the yagya despite being denied by lord Shiva was subjected to insults about her husband from Daksha Prajapati. This made Mata Sati to end her life by entering the fire. This angered lord Shiva who beheaded Daksha Prajapati and did Tandav Nritya with Sati mata’s body. To calm the anger of lord Shiva, lord Vishnu sent his Sudarshanchakra to cut Mata Sati’s body into 51 parts to separate Mahadev and Mata Sati. It is said that the places where these parts fell are now worshiped as Shakti peethas. By linking this sacred 51 Shakti peethas to this Temple makes it a cultural hub for devotion of Mata Durga by its followers. The 85 people are set out to bring the Jyotis from 51 Shakti peethas which are to be lit with Mata Durga’s worship making it a major worshiping event for the devotees.
